A World Icon A Louisville Legend and A Kentucky Thoroughbred.
Float Like A Butterfly Sting Like A Bee Rest In Peace Muhammad Ali
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The man simply known as "The Greatest" has died. Muhammad Ali inspired millions with his dominance in the ring and his humanitarian efforts outside of it.
He was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. in west Louisville in January 1942. During which time World War II was taking its toll on the world's economy and morale. In Louisville, segregation was law. For a young African-American man, obstacles were plenty and opportunities were few.Clay first stepped into a boxing ring at the age of 12. He took up boxing and showed considerable promise, spending much of his time training in Smoketown.
In 1960, at age 18, Clay won gold at the Rome Olympics. But his return to Louisville was marked with more obstacles. Clay was refused service at a local diner, and rumors circulated that, out of anger, the best amateur boxer in the world tossed his gold medal into the Ohio River.
Later in 1960, Clay took that racial adversity and won his first professional boxing title at Freedom Hall. Clay called on that inner strength again in 1964 while fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world. "If Sonny Liston beats me, I'll kiss his feet in the rain, tell him he's the greatest and catch the next jet out. That's what I think about Sonny Liston." Ali won, surprising everyone but himself.
One day after his heavyweight win, Clay joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. "I would like you to call me by my name now … Muhammad. Muhammad Ali." Soon after, Ali was forced to fight an opponent that didn't wear boxing gloves. In 1967, the war in Vietnam had escalated. For religious reasons, Ali refused the draft three times. "My intention is to box and win a clean fight. But the war, the intention is to kill.. kill.. kill." He was arrested, convicted and banned from boxing. Three years later, the United States Supreme Court reversed Ali's conviction, allowing him back in the ring. "I’m gonna float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. His hands can't hit what his eyes can't see." Ali rumbled in the jungle, thrilled in Manilla and quickly regained his heavyweight title -- the first to accomplish such a feat after a three year absence. It was yet another obstacle overcome by Ali. He retired in 1981 with 56 wins and 37 knockouts. He is the greatest.
Humanitarianism
Ali dedicated his life to helping others. He once said, "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth." It's a sentiment Ali lived by. Long before he retired from boxing, and consistently since, Ali's athleticism took a back seat to his humanitarianism. "I think he was probably one of the first athletes to do humanitarian work. If you think about his first professional fight, he gave his money to Kosair Children's Hospital, so that began the long journey of humanitarianism," Greg Roberts, with the Muhammad Ali Center, said.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Ali held exhibition fights to benefit hospitalized veterans and used proceeds from fights to send aid to drought-stricken nations in Africa. During the first Gulf War, Ali traveled to the Middle East, of his own accord, to seek the release of 15 hostages. The hostages were freed as a result of his intervention.
In Louisville, he made numerous anonymous tuition grants to local colleges. That means many of the people who received the grants never knew their education had been paid for by Ali. He even traveled to Afghanistan on behalf of the United Nations as a messenger of peace. "When you talk about the legacy of Muhammad Ali, there are so many things, so many lessons, that this man understood innately, that were just part of the fabric and core of his being. It serves as a blueprint or a road map for children, for adults and for so many of us," Ali's wife, Lonnie Ali, said.
The Muhammad Ali Center
The Muhammad Ali Center opened in November 2005, but it's only partially a tribute to Ali himself. "How do you inspire children once Muhammad is gone? What's going to keep this alive so they can take these lessons that maybe this individual has, and pass this on to children and others to inspire them to be the greatest they can be? That's why (the Ali Center) is here, it's not as much a tribute (as a) possibility," Lonnie Ali said. "Anything is possible; don't give me excuses, don't offer excuses, don't find excuses, stop making excuses -- just get out there and do it."
Local leaders and athletes honored Muhammad Ali at a ceremony in Louisville in February 2000. They spoke of Ali's achievements, calling the former boxing champ a hero for encouraging so many other people to purse their dreams. "He's a treasure to the city and the state, but he's also a treasure to the world and we've been given the privilege to protect Muhammad's legacy," Roberts said.
Muhammad Ali Honors Muhammad Ali was considered one of the most recognized sports figures in the world. He received numerous awards over the years for his work inside and outside of the ring. Ali was inducted into Kentucky’s Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 1999 he was honored with a special Athlete of the Century Award.
In 2005, Ali received the presidential Medal of Freedom; in 2009, he received the NAACP President's Award; and Sports Illustrated named Ali the ‘Sportsman of the Century.’
Ali's story isn't about being the greatest, it's about finding the greatness within.

Happy Kentucky Derby Day!!!!!
After being undefeated in 7 starts it shouldn't be a surprise that the favorite to win The Kentucky Derby was Nyquist. This horse lived up to his expectations today winning the Kentucky Derby with ease. Nyquist's jockey, Mario Gutierrez, along with Trainer, Doug O’Neill and Owner J. Paul Reddam had full confidence in their horse even though most competitors told them that Nyquist did not have the stamina to last a mile and a quarter. The Nyquist Team just smiled and went about their business every day of Derby Week while training. I guess that is the type of confidence you have when you and your horse win $ 1 Million Dollars in The Florida Derby just last month. Bettors were hardly surprised by the outcome as well. Nyquist was a 2 to 1 favorite paying $6.60 for a $2 bet. It was a lucrative day for Reddam too. Nyqvist's Kentucky Derby win was worth $1.24 million and lifted Nyqvist’s career earnings to more than $3 million Dollars.
Now that the Kentucky Derby is over, is it possible that Nyquist can match American Pharaoh's performance of last year winning The Triple Crown? You will have to watch The Preakness in two weeks to see if Nyquist can win that race make it to The Belmont Stakes!!!!
2016 Kentucky Derby Winner Nyquist!!!

Happy Black History Month!!
For Immediate Release January 29, 2016
Presidential Proclamation -- National African American History Month, 2016NATIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH, 2016 - - - - - - - BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION
America's greatness is a testament to generations of courageous individuals who, in the face of uncomfortable truths, accepted that the work of perfecting our Nation is unending and strived to expand the reach of freedom to all. For too long, our most basic liberties had been denied to African Americans, and today, we pay tribute to countless good-hearted citizens -- along the Underground Railroad, aboard a bus in Alabama, and all across our country -- who stood up and sat in to help right the wrongs of our past and extend the promise of America to all our people. During National African American History Month, we recognize these champions of justice and the sacrifices they made to bring us to this point, we honor the contributions of African Americans since our country's beginning, and we recommit to reaching for a day when no person is judged by anything but the content of their character.
From the Revolutionary War through the abolitionist movement, to marches from Selma to Montgomery and across America today, African Americans have remained devoted to the proposition that all of us are created equal, even when their own rights were denied. As we rejoice in the victories won by men and women who believed in the idea of a just and fair America, we remember that, throughout history, our success has been driven by bold individuals who were willing to speak out and change the status quo.
Refusing to accept our Nation's original sin, African Americans bound by the chains of slavery broke free and headed North, and many others who knew slavery was antithetical to our country's conception of human rights and dignity fought to bring their moral imagination to life. When Jim Crow mocked the advances made by the 13th Amendment, a new generation of men and women galvanized and organized with the same force of faith as their enslaved ancestors. Our Nation's young people still echo the call for equality, bringing attention to disparities that continue to plague our society in ways that mirror the non-violent tactics of the civil rights movement while adapting to modern times. Let us also not forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could make our voices heard by exercising our right to vote. Even in the face of legal challenges, every eligible voter should not take for granted what is our right to shape our democracy.
We have made great progress on the journey toward ensuring our ideals ring true for all people. Today, African American high school graduation and college enrollment rates are at an all-time high. The African-American unemployment rate has been halved since its Great Recession peak. More than 2 million African Americans gained health insurance thanks to the Affordable Care Act. The incarceration rates for African-American men and women fell during each year of this Administration and are at their lowest points in over two decades. Yet challenges persist and obstacles still stand in the way of becoming the country envisioned at our founding, and we would do a disservice to all who came before us if we remained blind to the way past injustices shape the present. The United States is home to 5 percent of the world's population, but 25 percent of the world's prisoners -- a disproportionate number of whom are African American -- so we must find ways to reform our criminal justice system and ensure that it is fairer and more effective. While we've seen unemployment rates decrease, many communities, particularly those of color, continue to experience significant gaps in educational and employment opportunities, causing too many young men and women to feel like no matter how hard they try, they may never achieve their dreams.
Our responsibility as citizens is to address the inequalities and injustices that linger, and we must secure our birthright freedoms for all people. As we mark the 40th year of National African American History Month, let us reflect on the sacrifices and contributions made by generations of African Americans, and let us resolve to continue our march toward a day when every person knows the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim February 2016 as National African American History Month. I call upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-ninth day of January, in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fortieth.
BARACK OBAMA
This is an office press release from The President of The United States Barack Obama and The White House Office of the Press Secretary
Home to the world’s most delectable bourbon and the nation’s most popular horse racing track, Louisville is a city known for doing great things. And just when you thought this city had enough to be proud of, we added a few scoops of sugar, some fresh local milk, a little bit of brown butter and plenty of peanut brittle to the mix. Louisville’s original ice cream chain, The Comfy Cow, has impressed ice cream-lovers all over the city with its inventive one-of-a-kind flavors since opening the doors to its first original location in Westport Village in 2009. Since, Tim and Roy Koons-McGee, owners of The Comfy Cow, have opened up four additional locations throughout Louisville, two in Southern Indiana and one in Nashville. The thick and creamy ice cream is always made fresh to please its loyal patrons and to win the hearts of everyone who gets a taste. So it’s no surprise that one of The Comfy Cow’s most popular flavors, Brown Butter Peanut Brittle became an instant hit recently at the 2015 World Dairy Expo Championship and brought home the title of "Ice Cream Grand Champion." “I can’t express how much it means to us to receive this award and affirmation from our industry,” said Tim Koons-McGee after winning the title. Taking first place over nearly 1,200 different ice creams, the deliciously sweet original Brown Butter Peanut Brittle ice cream was selected in a blind taste test which compared its loud flavor, body, creamy texture, melting quality, color and overall mouth-watering appearance to other ice creams listed throughout eight different categories. After winners from each category were selected, each was judged in order to select an overall winner. “We felt confident our ice cream would receive some type of recognition, but were overwhelmed by winning Grand Champion and the resounding vote of support,” said Roy Koons-McGee, who also added that this was The Comfy Cow’s first year in the competition. If you haven’t tried The Comfy Cow’s champion Brown Butter Peanut Brittle ice cream yet, what are you waiting for? Check out The Comfy Cow’s list of scoop shop locations on its website.
